Medical issues
As mentioned earlier, whether you decide to report your rape to the police
or not, there are lots of good reasons for you to see a doctor.
Here are some things you may wish to consider:
- Your immediate physical needs.
- Sexually transmitted infections.
- Options relating to unintended pregancy/morning after pill.
- IIlness, injury, shock.
- Menstruation changes.
- Forensic evidence.
You are entitled to have your physical needs met. A sympathetic doctor
can support you to attend to your immediate physical needs and discuss
possible long term effects. It is important to note that not all women
experience long term physical effects. Early medical intervention may
reduce this possiblity.
Sexual assault support workers or Women's Health Queensland Wide can
refer you to a doctor if you do not already have one with whom you would
feel comfortable. These workers can also refer you to other agencies,
such as sexual health clinics and services providing counselling and support
regarding pregnancy options. Women's Health Queensland Wide provide information
and referral only and are not a counselling service.
