Community Accountability: Transformative Responses to Harm
BRISSC acknowledge the Jagera and Turrbal people, as the traditional custodians of the land on which this event will take place. This land is stolen land, that always was and always will be Aboriginal land. BRISSC pays respect to the elders, past present and emerging. Whenever we speak about violence, we must address the violence that has and continues to occur from colonisation.
With massive thanks to the Gabba Ward for funding this event, join us for a day of discussion and workshoping about transformative approaches to harm and violence prevention in our communities.
The day will include lots of individual reflection, group discussions, speakers talking about their own experiences of community accountability, and interactive, informative workbooks and case studies.
Community Accountability are transformative responses to harm and violence. They provide an alternative for managing and preventing violence. They don't rely on calling the police, the legal system, or external authorities. Instead, Community Accountability relies on interpersonal relationships in your community to create ways to keep each other safe, challenge attitudes around violence, and hold people who cause harm accountability to their actions. We hope to provoke conversations that will encourage communities to develop intersectional analyses of violence and harm, and support communities to create their own appropriate alternatives to harm prevention.
